Convergence Initiative: Linking Food Systems Transformation and Climate Action launched in Jordan

04 February 2025

The Convergence Initiative builds on the UN Secretary-General’s call to action to accelerate the transformation of food systems to be more sustainable and resilient.

The Convergence Initiative, aimed at aligning food systems transformation with climate action, was launched today in Amman. This initiative, funded by the Dutch government and implemented by the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, seeks to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement by integrating these critical agendas.

Under the patronage of the Chairman of the Food Security Council, Minister of Agriculture Eng. Khaled AlHnaifat, the inaugural workshop highlighted the urgency of converging efforts to address climate change and achieve food security. Minister AlHnaifat emphasized that the initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing integration between efforts made to confront climate change and achieve food security. He noted that the convergence between food systems and climate action has become an urgent necessity, considering the climate and regional crises that have emphasized the close relationship between climate and food production, as climate change greatly affects the sustainability of food systems and the distribution of natural resources.

The Convergence Initiative builds on the UN Secretary-General’s call to action to accelerate the transformation of food systems to be more sustainable and resilient. It recognizes the interconnectedness of food systems and climate change, addressing the urgent need to transform food systems that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and water depletion.

Dr. Khaled Eltaweel, Senior Programmes Coordinator of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, outlined the initiative's objectives, stating that it aims to achieve change at three levels: strengthening cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder coordination at the governance level; developing Convergence Action Plans (CAPs) that integrate food systems pathways, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) at the policy level; and supporting programs and projects that reflect convergence across sectors at the implementation level.

Sheri Ritsema-Anderson, UN Resident Coordinator in Jordan, highlighted the critical importance of the initiative, stating, "Transforming food systems is not just important—it's urgent. By aligning our national food security strategy with climate action, we can build systems that are secure, sustainable, and resilient in the face of climate change." She added, "The United Nations is committed to supporting Jordan in this endeavor, working together to ensure that our efforts lead to tangible, lasting benefits for all."

Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Pier de-Vries, underscored the pressing need to address the impact of climate change on food security and food systems, especially as the effects of climate change become increasingly evident. He noted that the limited rainfall in Jordan this winter is a stark reminder of the growing challenges facing food systems. Mr. de-Vries affirmed the Netherlands' commitment to supporting innovative solutions that enhance resilience and sustainability, announcing that the Netherlands is supporting the Convergence Initiative in various countries, including Jordan as the first Arab country to join this effort, with a total contribution of $4 million.

The workshop convened key stakeholders, including government representatives, UN agencies, civil society organizations, food producers, and researchers, to discuss the initiative's framework, objectives, and implementation strategies. Participants explored how the Convergence Initiative can support countries in developing and implementing integrated approaches to food systems transformation and climate action.

This convergence workshop marks a significant step toward realizing the country's food systems transformation, climate, and development goals while contributing to global efforts to tackle climate change. By aligning national food systems and climate strategies, Jordan is positioning itself as a leader in the region in integrated approaches to sustainable development.
