Today we commemorate the 79th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations and highlight its enduring importance in fostering global peace, development, and cooperation. Established in 1945, the United Nations continues to provide an indispensable platform to a world that must work together to overcome common challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change.
This year, our commemoration of UN Day solemnly acknowledges, and strenuously condemns, the wave of shocking violence and bloodshed that has erupted across the Middle East region since 7 October 2023, which has led to a sickening cycle of escalation after escalation. But our commemoration also reflects and reaffirms the continued achievements and contributions of the United Nations even during these dark times.
On behalf of the 29 UN agencies that operate in Jordan, I take this UN Day to as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment and support for the Kingdom and its people in your pursuit of shared objectives domestically and beyond. Regional events are placing immense challenges on Jordan, but our dedication remains steadfast. We recognize the challenges, but together, we stand strong in our commitment to Jordan’s progress and stability, which is a high priority for the United Nations.
The work of the United Nations agencies is fully aligned with Jordan’s national priorities and closely tied to the country’s trilateral vision, encompassing political, economic, and administrative reforms. Together with the Government and national partners, UN agencies support advancements in education, agriculture, and food security; the creation of jobs, industrial innovation, and economic empowerment of youth, women and persons with disabilities; the strengthening of urban planning and local administration, and the protection of biodiversity and cultural heritage. The UN also remains a steadfast partner to Jordan in addressing the needs of Palestine and Syrian refugees that the nation so generously hosts, and in sending humanitarian aid to Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.
This day reminds us of the shared responsibility of us all – national and local government, the United Nations, civil society, local communities and individuals – to join together in active contribution to building pathways toward a more inclusive and prosperous future. We all have a responsbility to create a better world.
In the coming weeks, we invite you to follow our social media channels to learn more about our work on the ground in Jordan. These efforts demonstrate our strong partnership with the Kingdom in driving sustainable, positive change across all sectors.
As we commemorate UN Day, we reaffirm our dedication to Jordan’s journey toward peace, resilience, and shared prosperity for all.
