Routine Childhood Immunizations - How to protect your child from diseases

Measles, Pneumonia, Polio, and Hepatitis are all serious diseases that may pose a threat to the lives of children in Jordan or cause them some sort of a disability. The immune system has a major role in addressing such diseases and protecting children, and the ideal way to strengthen the immune system is vaccination.

For over two centuries, vaccines have safely reduced the scourge of diseases helping children grow up healthy and happy.

So, what is vaccination?

Vaccination is a simple, safe, and effective way of protecting people against harmful diseases before they come into contact with them, and it reduces the risk of infection. Vaccination uses the body's natural defenses to build resistance to specific infections and diseases, and develop immunity against them.

Every child in Jordan, regardless of nationality, has the right to receive free vaccinations at any health center affiliated with the Ministry of Health.

The National Immunization Programme in Jordan

UNICEF Jordan supports the National Expanded Programme on Immunization led by the Ministry of Health (MOH). Since 1979, routine immunization has been mandatory in Jordan. UNICEF support includes the provision of various vaccines, health supplies, cold chain equipment and technical expertise, as well as assistance in accessing hard-to-reach areas and vulnerable communities. Jordan's high vaccine coverage rate (95%) has contributed to a decline rate of deaths and vaccine-preventable disease (VPDs).

Thanks to the national Polio vaccination programme, Jordan has been Polio-free since 1992.

Are vaccinations only given to children?

Vaccination is for everyone. The National Vaccination Programme provides free vaccines to everyone in Jordan regardless of nationality, and they are provided at MOH’s health centers.

What are common side effects of vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines?

The Jordanian Ministry of Health confirms that there is no reason to be concerned of vaccines. Whether it’s vaccines against communicable diseases or even coronavirus.  

Possible side effects of vaccines:

• Low-grade fever up to 38°C.
• Pain, redness, or warmth at the injection site.
• Mild diarrhea.

Treatment: Mild reactions go away within a few days on their own, Use painkillers and warm compresses.
