Meet the winner of Khayt fashion design competition (Spring/Summer) collection
Sanaa's remarkable journey as a fashion designer took flight amidst the backdrop of the pandemic-induced lockdown when the world was confined to their homes.
It was during this period that she wholeheartedly pursued her true passion: fashion design. For years, she had been captivated by the enchanting pages of Vogue and other fashion magazines cherished by her mother. Throughout her university days, she fearlessly experimented, layering garments and skillfully transforming their shapes and silhouettes. Despite the demands and pressures of work, her unwavering devotion to the art of fashion endured.
Her path took a fortuitous turn when she embarked on a transformative training experience with a seasoned designer, who graciously imparted the craft of sewing. Eager to expand her skills and nurture her creative prowess, Sanaa made the resolute decision to enroll in the esteemed GSC Institute, a haven for honing her pattern-making and drawing abilities.
Motivated by her fervent belief in the power of sustainability, Sanaa drew inspiration from the myriad ways it was revolutionizing industries worldwide. Recognizing the fashion realm's paramount role in fostering a sustainable future, she delved into documentaries shedding light on the fast fashion industry and the environmental impact of factories. This profound realization propelled her to embark on a remarkable mission: to establish a brand exclusively dedicated to crafting sustainable pieces.
In her quest to minimize waste and champion eco-conscious practices, Sanaa ventured beyond conventional sourcing methods. She sought out fabric remnants discarded by factories, along with the remnants sold in fabric stores and the treasure troves of thrift shops. These neglected materials became the very foundation of her artistic expression.
Guided by the transformative concept of upcycling, Sanaa ingeniously breathed new life into the surplus fabric that amassed within factories. With meticulous craftsmanship, she seamlessly repurposed and redesigned these remnants, harmoniously blending elements of the past and present. The invaluable lessons passed down from our ancestors resurfaced as she artfully incorporated traditional patchwork techniques, reminiscent of the time-honored quilts and blankets crafted by generations before her.
Inspired by the splendor of mosaics, Sanaa saw how small fragments, when woven together, could birth breathtaking artistic masterpieces. Drawing from this realization, her designs emerged as a testament to environmental conservation and the profound impact of reducing waste in the fashion industry. Each garment radiated a harmonious blend of elegance and sustainability, exemplifying the beauty that can be found in repurposed fabric.
From this transformative concept, a remarkable capsule collection emerged—a manifestation of Sanaa's unwavering commitment to reviving discarded fabrics. What could have easily been consigned to landfills or burned became a captivating symphony of unique and feminine pieces, brimming with timeless charm.
Sanaa Mohammed's journey embodies the triumph of creativity, sustainability, and a boundless passion for fashion. With her indomitable spirit and dedication to preserving the environment, she continues to redefine the boundaries of fashion design, inspiring us all to embrace a future where beauty coexists harmoniously with responsible practices.
