Japan and UNOPS support the Royal Medical Services in Jordan

31 March 2026

Since the onset of the war in Gaza, RMS has been at the forefront of responding to urgent humanitarian and medical needs in Jordan and Gaza, including the establishment of field hospitals and supporting medical evacuation operations.

The Embassy of Japan, the Royal Medical Services (RMS) and UNOPS marked the completion of “Strengthening the Operational Capacity of the Royal Medical Service in Responding to the Regional Unrest” project, which provided critical medical equipment to RMS hospitals, and announced new support to Jordan’s healthcare system.

Since the onset of the war in Gaza, RMS has been at the forefront of responding to urgent humanitarian and medical needs in Jordan and Gaza, including the establishment of field hospitals and supporting medical evacuation operations. With USD 3.0 million in funding from the Government of Japan, UNOPS delivered specialized medical equipment to 14 RMS facilities across seven governorates.

Mr. ASARI Hideki, Ambassador of Japan to Jordan, said: “We hope that Japan’s humanitarian support will help Jordan overcome the current crisis while fulfilling its role as an anchor of regional stability by enhancing RMS’s capacity for effective medical support and healthcare provision for vulnerable populations throughout Jordan, as well as Palestinians medically evacuated to Jordan from Gaza under the royal initiative.”

Dr. Sahal Al-Hamouri, Director General of the Royal Medical Services, said: “This grant from the government of Japan embodies the depth of international partnership and cooperation in supporting Jordan’s medical sector, and contributes significantly to strengthening the work of Royal Medical Services’ hospitals and improving the quality and efficiency of the health care provided,” he said, emphasizing Royal Medical Services’ continued commitment to its national and humanitarian mission of providing comprehensive and distinguished health care.

“I am honored to witness yet another successful milestone in our long-standing partnership with the Government of Japan, supporting the Royal Medical Services in Jordan. The official handover of this new, essential equipment is instrumental in enhancing access to healthcare services, especially for vulnerable populations. Our sustained commitment and collaboration are crucial for ultimately strengthening Jordan’s overall resilience and its health sector capacity in particular for the benefit of all.” said Muhammad Usman Akram, Representative and Director of UNOPS Multi-Country Office  in Amman.

Following the successful completion of this project, the Government of Japan and UNOPS announced a launch of a new project to further enhance the operational capacity of the RMS, recognizing its critical role in the continued delivery of life-saving care, including under the “Jordanian Medical Corridor” announced in March 2025.

The newly announced support will further strengthen RMS service delivery capacity and help expand access to critical health services for vulnerable populations.

The projects  contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
