UNESCO and the Ministry of Education celebrate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters”

Through this joint initiative, UNESCO and the Ministry of Education reaffirmed their shared vision for safer schools, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for all.
In celebration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2025 and in light of Environment and Climate Month, UNESCO and the Ministry of Education held a special event at Al-Qaysariya Mixed Basic School in Amman under the global theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.”
The event brought together officials from the Ministry of Education, led by Dr. Faisal Al-Hawari, Director of the Planning Department, representing Sahar Al-Shakhatrah the Secretary General for Administrative and Financial Affairs, along with Dr. Khawla, Director of the Development Coordination Department, and Dr Mazen Hderis as Director of the Directorate of Education in Lewaa al jamaa, and several directors, educators, and students.
In his remarks, Dr. Faisal Al-Hawari conveyed the greetings of the Secretary-General and commended the significant efforts made by the Ministry of Education and its partners in promoting a culture of prevention and disaster risk reduction. He emphasized that this event reflects the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the safety of students and educational staff and demonstrates Jordan’s dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and implementing international strategies in this field.
Speaking on behalf of Ms. Noha Bawazir, UNESCO Representative to Jordan, Ms. Nesrin Morad a UNESCO representative stated: “UNESCO continues to work hand in hand with the Ministry of Education and national partners to integrate disaster risk reduction, environmental awareness, and sustainability into Jordan’s education system.”
The event also marked the 75th anniversary of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan’s membership in UNESCO, celebrating a long-standing partnership rooted in shared values of innovation, sustainability, and peace.
Students from grades 1–9 showcased creative performances and activities, including a theatrical sketch, a Civil Defense demonstration on emergency preparedness, and a “Safety Heroes” awareness corner. Appreciation certificates co-signed by UNESCO and the Ministry of Education were distributed to all 760 students in recognition of their participation.
